Buffalo chooses downtown site for Amtrak stop

According to local news reports, the selection committee announced their choice of a downtown location for Buffalo’s new Amtrak station, located not far from the existing facility at Exchange Street. The new location is near the new Canalside development, which has brought millions in new investments to the formerly industrial waterfront area. The downtown station would only serve Empire Corridor trains and the Maple Leaf, while the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago would only stop at the suburban Buffalo-Depew station. Supporters had campaigned hard for Buffalo Central Terminal to be selected as the new station site, which hosted its last Amtrak train in 1979.
