Sonora-Marin Area Rail Transit Debut

The long-anticipated Sonora-Marin Area Rail Transit commuter rail made its debut on August 25, with full service beginning the following day. Half-off fares were offered through September 4 to encourage new riders. The new service operates over a 43-mile portion of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad between Santa Rosa and San Rafael, Calif. Construction began in 2012, and an extension is being planned to Larkspur to allow a direct connection with ferries to San Francisco.
