ACE train derailment near Sunol

An Altamont Corridor Express commuter train struck a tree near Sunol, Calif., and derailed on the evening of March 7. The resulting collision forced the lead coach off the tracks and into a nearby creek. Of the 214 passengers onboard 9 were injured and 4 of the 9 were transported to local hospitals. Service was cancelled on March 8 while Union Pacific worked to clear the tracks and make repairs. According to ACE, the preliminary investigation indicates a mudslide was the cause of the derailment. Normal service resumed on March 9, though delays through Niles Canyon continue as slow orders are enacted while repairs to the track bed are completed.

Launched in 1998, ACE provides commuter rail service between San Jose and Stockton over the former Western Pacific route through Altamont Pass.
