LIRR sideswipe closes Main Line

A Long Island Rail Road commuter train sideswiped a work train near New Hyde Park, N.Y., on October 8, injuring 33 of the 600 passengers on board. The collision occurred just after 9:00 p.m. when a work train moving on an adjacent track, entered the track space of the commuter train. The cause is being investigated by the Federal Railroad Administration. The crash closed the Main Line throughout the weekend while the investigation was ongoing. Limited service resumed on Monday.
