Metra to Purchase Surplus Amtrak F59PHIs

Chicago commuter carrier Metra announced the purchase of 21 F59HPI diesel locomotives from Amtrak to help with a motive power shortage. These locomotives were built by EMD in 1998, and have been recently rebuilt. Currently assigned to Amtrak California service, the F59s are being replaced by new Siemens Charger diesels. Metra has also released a request for proposals to replace its aging fleet of diesels, though the first new locomotives would not be delivered before 2020.
