Mike Schafer to Retire, Kevin Holland Named Editor of Passenger Train Journal

BUCKLIN, Mo. – White River Productions is pleased to announce Kevin J. Holland has been named editor of Passenger Train Journal, effective with the Third Quarter 2022 issue later this year. Veteran author and historian Mike Schafer has been PTJ’s editor since the magazine was brought back to life by WRP in 2006. Mike previously served as editor when the magazine was published by Pentrex in the 1990s and has been at the helm of PTJ for more than 15 years. While Mike is retiring as editor, he will still be involved in writing articles for the magazine. His other work for WRP in historical society publications will continue into the foreseeable future.

PTJ Kevin HollandKevin J. Holland has been part of the PTJ editorial and design team since the magazine’s 2006 revival, most recently as Senior Editor, and has been editor of WRP’s Passenger Train Annual since its revival in 2009. Kevin has been active in the railroad publishing field for more than four decades as a writer, editor, and designer, and is the author of more than 20 books and dozens of feature articles on aspects of railroad history, technology, operations, and architecture. He edited and produced WRP’s Amtrak by the Numbers book in 2011, and has just completed editorial and production work on the upcoming book, Fifty Years of Amtrak Trains. His interests are weighted heavily toward passenger trains, in North America and overseas, past and present, and his editorial experience is well-suited to take the helm of PTJ.

Founded in 1968 by Kevin McKinney, PTJ ceased publication as a monthly magazine in 1996. White River Productions revived the title in 2006 as a quarterly publication with Mike Schafer as editor.
